Body Capacity: A Trait to Remember

Rip Stalvey warned exhibition breeders not to focus so heavily on color and show type that they forget the functional traits of the bird. He connected body capacity, sound structure, fertility, livability and productivity as parts of the same breeding picture.

Body capacity must fit the breed

Rip did not propose one shape for every bird. Capacity should be judged in relation to the normal type and conformation of the breed. A productive Leghorn and a productive Cornish should not be expected to carry the same body shape.

Width and internal capacity

He pointed to appropriate width between the legs as one useful indication of abdominal capacity. The larger idea was to select birds with enough functional body room for normal organ function, reproduction and production without distorting correct breed type.

Do not ignore the legs

Rip also called attention to leg structure. From the front, the legs should be sound and properly aligned. Birds that are markedly cow-hocked or bow-legged may have movement and long-term structural problems even when their color or upper body looks attractive.

Select the whole bird

The article’s lasting lesson is to evaluate exhibition stock as complete breeding animals. Beauty in the showroom should be supported by sound structure and useful production characteristics.
