Timing is critical in showing. What a bird may become two or six months later does not matter when the show is today.

Judge the Bird Presented Today

A bird’s corrective breeding potential does not determine its show placement. The judge must evaluate how closely the bird presented on that day approaches the written Standard.

This distinction is important. A breeder may recognize that a bird could be valuable in a mating because it complements another bird. In the showroom, however, the bird is evaluated for its own present merit—not for what its offspring might become.

Build Your Own Eye

Learn to trust your own instincts about what makes a good bird, but base that judgment on continued study of the written Standard and honest comparison.

Listen to experienced exhibitors, breeders and judges, but always return to the Standard and verify what you have been told for yourself. Hands-on study of birds, families and classes is how perspective becomes experience.

Keep the Hobby in Perspective

Results will change. Judges may emphasize different strengths, the competition may be deeper, and a bird may present itself differently from one day to another.

Study the Standard, compare honestly, learn from others, verify for yourself—and enjoy the hobby.
