Entering Poultry Shows

American Poultry Association · December 2021

Drawing on show-secretary experience, Bart Pals offered a practical checklist for exhibitors. Most problems, he suggested, can be prevented before show day by reading the rules carefully, completing the entry correctly and arriving prepared.

Before sending the entry

Read the event rules from beginning to end, fill in every requested class and bird detail, keep a copy for your own records, and submit both entry and payment by the required deadline to the correct person or system.

Prepare the birds and the trip

Birds should be conditioned and groomed within the time frame appropriate for the species and breed. Bart also recommended taking needed feed and bedding, checking birds for last-minute faults or problems, and knowing the route to the show before leaving home.

At the show

Check in with the show desk, collect any exhibitor packet or last-minute instructions, and follow the event rules exactly. When possible, watch your birds being judged so you can see how they behave and learn from the experience.

The larger lesson

The checklist is simple by design: good preparation reduces confusion for exhibitors and show management alike. Current Poultry Showcase exhibitors should still use the rules and deadlines published for the specific event they are entering.
